FSC-Certified Unbleached Kraft &
Soy-Based Litho Inks Engineering Guide
Over 74% of modern DTC consumers actively prioritize brands that utilize plastic-free, recyclable, and sustainably sourced packaging. However, navigating environmental claims without greenwashing requires strict compliance with international forestry and print chemistry standards.
In this technical guide, we examine the structural properties of unbleached virgin kraft paperboard, the principles of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) paperboard sourcing, and the environmental benefits of soy and vegetable-based inks.
1. Understanding FSC Paperboard Sourcing
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is the global benchmark for responsible forest management. FSC paperboard materials fall into three distinct classifications:
- FSC 100%: 100% of virgin fiber originates from FSC-certified forests managed under strict biodiversity, zero-deforestation, and indigenous community rights protections.
- FSC Recycled: Manufactured from 100% post-consumer and pre-consumer reclaimed paper waste.
- FSC Mix: A controlled blend of FSC-certified virgin timber, recycled fiber, and controlled wood.
Note for Brand Owners: To display the official FSC "Check Tree" logo on your packaging dieline, your brand must hold an authorized FSC Chain-of-Custody (CoC) license code, or procure production through an audited certified plant network.
2. The Structural Strength of Unbleached Virgin Kraft
White corrugated paperboard requires chemical chlorine dioxide bleaching to strip away natural wood lignin. While bleached board offers a pure white printing surface, the bleaching process slightly shortens and weakens the cellulose fibers.
Natural brown unbleached kraft preserves 100% of the long softwood pine fibers. As a result, 32 ECT Natural Kraft Corrugated exhibits approximately 14% higher tensile tear strength and greater puncture resistance than bleached white boards of identical caliper.
3. Soy-Based and Vegetable Litho Printing Inks
Traditional petroleum-based printing inks emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and leave synthetic hydrocarbon residues that contaminate paper recycling repulping facilities.
- Zero VOC Emissions: Soy-based inks replace petroleum carrier oils with natural soybean and vegetable oils, reducing VOC emissions by over 80%.
- Effortless De-Inking: During municipal paper recycling, soy inks detach cleanly from wood fibers during the hydro-pulper wash cycle, producing cleaner recycled pulp with higher yield.
- Vibrant Pigment Dispersion: Soy oil's natural clarity allows higher pigment loading, resulting in richer, more vibrant ink transfer on uncoated kraft surfaces.
